Mauricio's Success Story

Mauricio had been unemployed for three months when he decided to check out Calgary Career Hub in 2021. His primary barriers to employment were his resume and cover letter. He needed guidance on making his applications ATS-friendly and tailored to the job posting. Mauricio also wanted assistance diversifying his job search to access more opportunities, and a better understanding of Canadian job culture.

To help the Mauricio overcome these barriers, Calgary Career Hub provided a variety of supports including customized workshops: Resumes Part 1 & 2, Interview. Skills Part 1 & Part 2, Networking and Informational Interviews and Self-Marketing. Mauricio also worked one-on-one with his Career Advisor to review his updated application and discuss strategies for diversifying his job search, targeting different job boards, websites and employer contacts.

Mauricio says, “Every interaction I had with Calgary Career Hub made me feel like I was amongst friends who were there to give me good advice. Their approach to interactions made a lot of my reservations vanish and I was open and trusting with them, which helped them give me better advice.”

Mauricio and his Career Advisor created a Service Plan to identify goals to help him tailor his resume to the posting, utilize a cover letter to increase his callbacks and discuss online and networking strategies to diversify his job search. “The demystification of the job market made me a better job seeker and, as a result, a better candidate,” says Mauricio. “Understanding my skills and weak spots gave me ideas to highlight the first and work on overcoming the latter. It became a mindset that I will extend into my new job.”

With support from Calgary Career Hub, Mauricio is now employed as an Instructional Designer. “Getting the job I wanted fills me with pride,” says Mauricio. “Especially because the conditions of employment exceeded my expectations. I want to remain humble, but I am proud to think that the hard work I put in paid off.”
