Alicia's Story

Alicia visited Calgary Career Hub in July 2020. Although she had been unemployed for less than a month after her previous contract ended, it had been a long time since Alicia had applied for work and she was not sure where to start.

Alicia found her main barriers to employment were that she had not looked for work in a long time, and she was trying to enter the workforce under difficult conditions caused by COVID-19. She needed to learn how to write a cover letter and tailor a resume to highlight her specific skills, as well as find new ways to build and engage a network in a changing environment. Alicia’s goals were centred around understanding current job search tools and platforms, writing her resume and cover letter, and working on her networking and job search strategies.

To help Alicia overcome her barriers, Calgary Career Hub provided a variety of supports. Alicia attended several workshops that focused on resume and cover letter writing, self-marketing, job search, career exploration, interview skills, LinkedIn, and effective communications. She also worked one-on-one with a Career Advisor to improve her cover letter and resume and to review her LinkedIn profile. A Job Developer helped her assess her job profile and connected her to employers by giving her job leads. Alicia was also able to update her Excel skills by using Exposure Course funding which, opened even more doors in her job search.

Alicia feels she was successful because she actively engaged in service and applied the advice from the team at Calgary Career Hub. “They provided the skills and training to find a new job and encouraged me to be persistent in my search.”

Alicia shared, “Now I know how to use new techniques and media platforms for successful job hunting and networking. That makes me feel more confident in my transferrable skills. I really appreciated the Calgary Career Hub’s professionalism and care. Their Facilitators and Career Advisors treat every client well, giving hope and providing help with a smile.”

Alicia landed a full-time position in her preferred field during the pandemic.
