Video Resumes - Novelty or the Future?
What is a video resume? It is a short film clip where a job seeker lays out their qualifications and fit for a job.
It is becoming increasingly common for job applicants to find creative ways to get noticed. More workers, especially younger ones, are finding ways to grab hiring managers’ attention by using video résumés. It’s a strong extra piece of marketing material and can pique curiosity and help candidates stand out. Nearly six in 10 job seekers feel that sharing a video with hiring managers better highlights their personality and improves their odds of getting the job.
So, a recorded video could soon replace the standard written formal resume and cover letter. And job seekers are able to show off communication skills and creativity in a way that is more effective than a traditional written word resume.
Here’s the most important question: will a video resume actually increase your chances of getting a job?
Some hiring managers believe video resumes are more effective when it comes to vetting job candidates.
Currently video resumes are still a novelty but they are gradually becoming more common. They will likely act as an addendum to the traditional resume, not a replacement. They may be more of an add-on/ additional information piece that a recruiter can request to provide information on communication skills.
So, depending on the industry sector, the current consensus is that video resumes may have some staying power.
