Mmenyene's Success Story
Mmenyene arrived in Canada in January of 2023 and had been looking for work since. She had originally studied in Victoria, British Columbia and then returned to Nigeria after completing her program before returning to Canada and settling in Calgary. Her biggest challenge in sustaining work was her lack of Canadian work experience. Although she had some experience in the Technology industry, she was still quite new. But Mmenyene was determined not to find a “survival job” but rather to focus on finding a job to begin establishing her career based on her interests, training, and experience.
“The odds were against me – no Canadian experience, no real work experience in the field (just projects and freelance roles). I knew it would happen, but I just wasn’t sure if I would be able to get my resume noticed.”
Mmenyene started working with Calgary Career Hub in March of 2023 and together they worked on honing her resume to target her field of work and preparing for interviews as they came up, so she could feel confident and prepared. She was open to applying to entry level positions, if necessary, to break into her main area of interest.
Despite experiencing a tremendous loss in her family and having to return to Nigeria in the middle of the program, Mmenyene attended all the workshops and kept in contact with her Career Advisor. She sought out help with her resumes to ensure they were targeted well for the jobs she was applying for and requested interview preparation calls to review potential interview questions and get feedback.
“Calgary Career Hub is a dedicated team of people that truly want to help you succeed. The workshops and resources are free, it only required that I show up and put in effort.”
Mmenyene never gave up, even when overcoming a personal setback with the loss of a close family member. She engaged fully in the process and reached out for support when things became discouraging. She took advantage of what CalgaryCareer Hub provided her – advice and information from the workshops and support from her Career Advisor – to keep moving forward. Now Mmenyene is employed full time as a Cloud Engineer. Mmenyene is proof of what dedicated hard work and a commitment to what she wants for her life can accomplish.
“After going through the resources in the Calgary Career Hub repository, I was able to write a resume and a cover letter that got me my first role as a Cloud Engineer. It is all forward movement from here on out.”
Congratulations Mmenyene!
