Kodjo's Story
Kodjo immigrated to Canada in June and as a newcomer, he was unfamiliar with Canadian workplace culture and the hiring processes. Although highly skilled in his field, he had been unemployed for two months when he reached out to Calgary Career Hub in August 2020.
Kodjo’s primary barrier to employment was revamping his resume to create a tailored and ATSfriendly version that effectively marketed his skills and experience. Kodjo attended several workshops that focused on resume and cover letter writing, self-marketing, Hero job search, career exploration, interview skills, LinkedIn, and effective communications.
One-on-one assistance and workshops helped Kodjo gain the knowledge he needed to confidently present his experience to potential employers. He also increased his confidence with interview preparation workshops and a one-on-one guidance from his Career Advisor. Kodjo developed his understanding of Canadian workplace culture through a one-on-one appointment with the Centre Assistant who answered questions and discussed cultural aspects of working in Canada.
Calgary Career Hub knows that Kodjo is successful because he was actively engaged in their services, participated in workshops, attended scheduled appointments, and asked for support. Kodjo knows he is successful because he landed a full-time position in his field!
Kodjo is now working full time as a Principal Advisor, Internal Audit, Specialized IT.
Kodjo says, “I gained confidence in positives I already had. I gained a better understanding of the Canada’s job market and work environment which was very different from other environments I experienced in the past. Calgary Career Hub also helped me improve the quality of my resume and my interview skills.” “Calgary Career Hub helped me secure a good job that met my expectations and facilitated my integration with my new employer. I am thankful I was able to secure a good job in a tricky period when the world is facing an unpreceded crisis of COVID-19.”
“I came to Canada with a good professional aptitude and attitude. My advisor did not focus only on my weaknesses or improvement opportunities, but she took the time to emphasize what was already good in my experience and abilities. That made me so confident and even more open to the opportunities for improvement.”
