Karen's Story
Karen had not applied for a job in over 11 years and was eager to learn new skills and tools on how to apply for jobs on-line. Her goal was to find a management or executive position within the not-for -profit industry but needed help on how to tailor her resume to match the company’s requirements. Also, Karen had not attended an interview in many years, so she wanted to practice and build her interview skills and confidence.
In the beginning of Karen’s Calgary Career Hub journey, she was given a clear outline of what resources were available and how her Career Advisor could help. Taking full advantage, Karen learned how to write a resume and cover letter, how to set up LinkedIn profile, how to network and how to request informational interviews. Karen recognized that expectations and resume writing had changed over the years and her Career Advisor helped her build a more relevant resume. In addition, Karen attended 5 one-on-one sessions with her Career Advisor to develop her networking skills, improve her job search process and prepare for the interview. Throughout the experience Karen shared, “I was able to clearly understand and identify what I was looking for in a position and organization. This helped me to highlight the right skills and experience and end up in a role that fit what I truly desired.”
Stepping out of her comfort zone and applying for roles in different areas of the non-profit sector was her top achievement and gave her new insights and enthusiasm. Karen sated, “I feel successful in that I was able to use the tools and knowledge provided to me to identify what I wanted to achieve, and to successfully obtain a job that I truly enjoy all in the midst of a pandemic.”
Karen achieved success with a full time (40 hours a week) position as Coordinator of Integrated Programs! Congratulations Karen!
