James' Story
April 9, 2020 was James’ last day of work in his role. He had enjoyed working in the financial sector and was working toward becoming an accountant. Unfortunately, he felt that his current position, professionally, was not the right fit for him and his skill set. He was getting older and decided that it was time for him to tackle some of the barriers that were holding him back.
James lacked the CPA qualification he required to apply for most accountant roles he was finding on job boards, and despite applying to jobs online was not receiving any call backs. After three weeks of attempts and little success for his efforts, he visited Calgary Career Hub where he quickly set to work. Once there, the team helped guide James on the steps to improving his resume, making it more effective with Applicant Tracking Systems and how to maximize his networking efforts.
“I appreciated the continued follow-up and advice from the Calgary Career Hub team!”
At CCH, James and the team created a plan for success, and he accessed workshops on Resumes & Cover Letters, Networking, Interview Skills, and the Hidden Job Market. He learnt how to better highlight his qualifications and to market himself to employers with stronger accomplishment statements – for demonstratable results.
“It has helped me make relevant and great strides in my job search! I’m proud of the progress made to date.”
He also worked directly with a Career Advisor to receive personalized feedback on his resume and job search strategies. With the Job Developer, James kept a close watch on the job opportunities best suited to him and was connected for interviews with three recruiters handling Accountants specifically.
James’ willingness to tackle his challenges head on was rewarded. His improved resume, interview skills, and his network of recruiters and business contacts helped him to secure a role as a Senior Accountant! His new position makes use of all of his skill set, is challenging professionally and very exciting!
“Every step forward is to be celebrated. Obtaining employment is a great achievement given the current situation in the job market!”
Congratulations James!
