Your Online Presence - What to Avoid on Social Media

What to Avoid on Social Media

A recent study confirmed that more than half of employers surveyed (57%) said they found something during their social screenings that led them to NOT hire someone. In case you didn’t know, social ‘screenings’ are now done by most recruiters and hiring managers as part of a pre-screening process.

These are the top five types of posts and behavior that left employers with a bad impression:

  1. Job candidate posted provocative or inappropriate photographs, videos or information.

  2. Job candidate posted information about them drinking or using drugs.

  3. Job candidate had discriminatory comments related to race, gender, religion, etc.

  4. Job candidate was linked to criminal behaviour.

  5. Job candidate lied about their qualifications.

And professionals shouldn't ease up on ensuring their online presence is positive once they land a job. One study found that 48% of employers use social networking sites to research current employees. Of those, 34% have found content that caused them to discipline or even fire an employee.

Set a goal for yourself to carefully review your social media sites regularly.
