The Elevator Pitch - a short impactful introduction!
An elevator pitch is a brief (think 30 seconds) way of introducing yourself, getting across a key point or two, and making a connection with someone. It's called an elevator pitch because it takes the same amount of time you would spend while riding an elevator with someone.
So, this is the scenario: You are searching for a new job and are planning to apply at a company you are interested in. The person responsible for hiring at the company is one of your LinkedIn contacts and you send a message asking for an informational interview. You get a response right away and before you know it, you are chatting with his person on the phone.
Now you have only a few minutes to convince them you are a strong candidate for the job. What do you say after you tell them your name?
Follow this proven format for an impactful ‘elevator pitch’ introduction:
Use the 3 P’s:
Previous experience or training (# of years / educational qualifications)
Portable skills (transferable skills from other areas in your life – work and personal)
Personal traits/passions (characteristics / people skills)
Write it, practice it, and use it – the result may lead to your next job!
