Motivation - How to Keep Going when Things are Tough
It’s no secret that the job search is tough. Job searchers can spend weeks, or months, going through the arduous process of searching for new opportunities, updating resumes, applying, and interviewing. And most of us have to do it over many times. It is exhausting and you become mentally tired.
Burnout happens to the best of us and seems to be a fixed part of the business of job searching. So how do you find internal motivation to continue when things are hard, and the job search seems stalled?
First of all - acknowledge your feelings, frustration, and exhaustion. Treat yourself with compassion.
Re-group and focus on bite size goals: Set aside an hour or two each day for job searching or networking. Stick to the time limit. You will feel more productive and won’t feel guilty doing other things.
Celebrate wins: If you are constantly waiting for a long-term payoff, you will forget how important all the little wins are.
Here are a few things you can do to lift your spirits:
Volunteer Locally: there is always a soup kitchen, library, animal shelter or church looking for volunteers. Want an immediate pick me up? Volunteer!
Physical and Mental Health Care: Take time for physical and mental wellbeing. Get exercise and fresh air. Eat healthy food and maintain social contact with friends and family. Every job seeker has a story. Share your story. Feeling support from those you love helps you stay focused and encouraged.
Declutter: Have a closet that needs attention? Now is the time. Unbelievably, cleaning and decluttering releases endorphins and burns calories – bonus!
Time: Spend time with elderly neighbors or aging parents. Help out in your kids’ classrooms. You will be grateful you had this time to give them.
Summary: don't panic, keep focus, know your strengths and what you want, don't give up, and go easy on yourself. Remember that rejection is a common part of the job search process. Each "no’ brings you closer to the "yes" you're seeking. Stay positive!
