Is your Job Offer Legit? How to spot a Job Offer Scam.
Before you accept a job offer, take these simple steps to protect yourself:
Do an online search. Look up the name of the company or the person who’s hiring you, plus the words “scam,” “review,” or “complaint.” If it is a scam, you might find out they’ve also scammed other people.
Never accept a job offer immediately: Always take some time to think about it, even if you are sure you will accept. Let the employer know you are considering the offer closely, but need a day or two to review and/or speak to your family about it. This will give you vital time to think about the offer and do some research.
Talk to someone you trust. Describe the offer to them. What do they think?
Don't pay for the promise of a job. Legitimate employers, including the federal government, will never ask you to pay to get a job. Anyone who does is a scammer.
Never bank on a “cleared” cheque. No legitimate potential employer will ever send you a cheque and then tell you to send back part of the money, or buy gift cards with it. That’s a fake cheque scam. It will bounce, and the bank will want you to repay the amount.
