Do I Need a Cover Letter?
The best advice is to follow the instructions. If the posting says, “do not include a cover letter”, then don’t send one. If the instructions say, “cover letter optional”, include one. Be the applicant who does more than what is required. It’s true that some employers don’t read cover letters, however, you don’t always know if and when they will.
Reasons to include a cover letter: To demonstrate your written communication skills; expand on relevant details from your resume; show your personality; communicate why you want to work for the company; include relevant information from older work experiences; detail your transferable skills and how they align with the qualifications of the role; explain gaps in work experience; state your intent to follow-up.
