5 Ways to Get Ready for a Video Interview

Many job seekers dread the ‘video interview’ when in fact, it is a great way to separate yourself from other applicants by showing your personality and soft skills while leaving the interviewer with a great first impression.  Since getting a foothold during the pandemic, virtual interviews are still going strong, and can be done through Zoom, Google, MS Teams, or Skype.

Here are a few tips to get yourself situated before a Virtual Interview:

  1. Take time to check your technology. Ensure your device is fully charged, connected, positioned at eye level and ready to go.  Perform a camera and sound check in advance.

  2. Remove distractions or interruptions.  Put the dog outside, have someone take the kids and place a Do Not Disturb sign over the doorbell – you never know when that Amazon package will arrive!

  3. Dress for success by wearing clothing for an in-person interview – this is a first impression, after all.

  4. Present a confident attitude and show your personality.  Smile, sit straight and make eye contact with the camera without staring into it!  Relax into the interview and be yourself, but be your BEST self.

  5. Prepare by researching the company, reviewing your answers to behavioural questions with STAR stories and practice speaking about your strengths, your accomplishments, and your future goals.
