Akos' Success
Akos was working as a Project Manager with a local company when she was sadly laid off due to a shortage of work. After five months of being unemployed, she first visited the Calgary Career Hub.
She was experiencing a number of hurdles in her job search, most notably looking for a job in an incredibly competitive market. As a Project Manager for a Construction company, there were many others looking for similar roles - this meant that even highly skilled applicants like Akos were struggling in their job searches. The good news was she was continuing to receive invitations to interview, but was unfortunately unsuccessful despite feeling like the interviews went well.
Akos was looking for feedback and help with her interviewing and job search, and she was able to find that at the Calgary Career Hub. She worked with the team to improve her interviewing, and attended a number of workshops; Resumes That Get Read, Cover Letters and Effective References, and Interview Skills. She attended an event hosted by employer Aerotek, and discovered the best ways to find opportunities through LinkedIn. She also attended a workshop presented by Global Connections ESL, and had the chance to hear directly from an employer regarding how to stand out in an interview.
Working closely with Job Developer Debra, Akos was provided with job leads and submitted her resume to employers who were looking for candidates like Akos. The goal was to help Akos feel more confident in her interview skills - and to provide her with warm introductions to employers, to give her a competitive edge...
Her confidence paid off! Akos put to use all she had learned and was able to effectively promote her skill set on social media and LinkedIn, and found a role through her LinkedIn searching efforts! When asked why she would consider herself a success, Akos said:
“I didn’t come to learn and go away, I implemented what I learned and put in all the hard work that was required of me and it paid off. I learned a lot about networking and using social media in the job search. I got a job through LinkedIn which I wasn’t utilizing before coming to the Career Hub!”
CCH is a good resource for people looking for a job. At home you can do it, coming here gives you another world view – didn’t know that hidden job market was so high. My eyes were opened to the job market – especially the social media aspect and utilizing this really helped me. Support with resume, interviews – one on one – not alone, lots of people supporting me. The employees – support, advice and encouragement, kindness – really helped a lot. I felt less stressed. Meeting other people looking for work made me feel that I was not alone. The Career Hub environment was motivating!
Well done Akos! Congratulations on the new role!
